Short Shaheedi Story
Bhai Gurcharan Singh Khaparkheri, also known as Bhai Channu, was a dedicated devotee of the Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale Jatha. From the beginning of the Dharam Yudh Morcha, he stayed at Sri Darbar Sahib with the Damdami Taksal Jatha, committed to the Sikh cause.
On 2nd June 1984, as the Indian Army's assault on Sri Darbar Sahib had begun a day earlier (1st June), Bhai Channu was seen performing Kar Sewa (voluntary service), paddling a cart full of sand to build morchas (defensive positions) near Akal Takht Sahib. At that moment, his close friend and fellow village friend, Bhai Rajivinder Singh Bholla Khaparkheri, a veteran Kharku and also a member of the Bhindranwale Jatha, approached him and asked, “Bhai Channu, what are you doing here?”
Bhai Channu, drenched in sweat but unwavering in spirit, replied, “Veer, I am preparing the morchas. We are ready to battle the army till our last breath. you will see, this battle gonna make history and teach leason to hindustan army. our Khalistan would be made within days now” Even amidst the intense heat and looming threat, Bhai Channu continued reciting Gurbani while carrying out this selfless service.
On 6th June 1984, during the final phase of the attack, Bhai Channu attained Shaheedi (martyrdom) near the morchas of Akal Takht Sahib, fighting alongside other brave Singhs, defending the sanctity of Sri Darbar Sahib with unshakable courage and faith.
