Short Shaheedi Story

After his release from Jodhpur Jail on December 3, 1989, Bhai Harminder Singh Sandhu’s family arranged his marriage to Bibi Kulwinder Kaur, the younger sister of his Shaheed wife, Bibi Paramjit Kaur, on January 17, 1990. Following his marriage, Bhai Sandhu resumed his active involvement in Sikh political affairs, particularly through the All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF). Committed to achieving the goal of Khalistan through political means, he advocated for a peaceful and diplomatic path toward Sikh sovereignty. However, his stance led to significant ideological disagreements with several Kharku Jathebandis (armed groups), who believed in a more Kharku approach. Despite receiving multiple threats due to his political position and decisions, Bhai Sandhu remained undeterred, standing firmly by his beliefs. His resilience, however, did not come without consequence. During his imprisonment in Jodhpur Jail, personal tensions had developed between Bhai Sandhu and General Labh Singh Panjwar, a prominent figure in the armed Kharku wing of the movement, along with his followers. These tensions persisted even after their release, creating internal conflicts within the movement. Tragically, on January 24, 1990, Bhai Harminder Singh Sandhu was assassinated at his home in Amritsar. His death was the result of internal disputes, often referred to as the fratricidal war that plagued the Khalistan movement, where ideological and strategic differences led to the loss of numerous prominent Singhs. Bhai Sandhu’s murder marked a significant and sorrowful chapter in the history of the struggle, as internal divisions weakened the broader cause and claimed the lives of many dedicated freedom fighters.
