Short Shaheedi Story
On 28 February 1990, around midnight (approximately 1:00 a.m.), Bhai Gurnam Singh Thathi and four other Kharku Singhs, including Bhai Balvir Singh Bhutto, Bhai Sukha of village Mehmudpura, and another Singh (possibly Davinder Singh of village Mari Mustafa), were crossing back into India from Pakistan at the Indo-Pak border in Khemkaran Sector. They were returning from Noorwala on the Pakistani side to the village of Kalia Saktra on the Indian side. Bhai Gurnam Singh was himself a resident of the village of Thathi Jaimal Singh, which was less than 2 KM from the encounter border pickets.
As the Singhs approached the border, the Indian BSF forces, who had already received prior information about their movement, confronted them. The Singhs were carrying newly acquired ammunition for their Jathebandi, which they had purchased from a Pakistani arms supplier using money raised from selling their own farmland.
The encounter lasted approximately three to four hours. In the end, four Singhs—Bhai Gurnam Singh Thathi, Bhai Balvir Singh Bhutto, Bhai Sukha of village Mehmudpura, and another Singh (possibly Davinder Singh of village Mari Mustafa)—attained martyrdom. One Kharku Singh out of the other five Singhs was captured alive but was later reportedly killed by Indian forces in what was described as a fake encounter.
