Short Shaheedi Story

Bhai Parmatma Singh Tajoke served as the personal security officer to Sant Harchand Singh Ji Longowal. Following the Indian Army’s attack on Sri Darbar Sahib in June 1984, Sant Longowal and several other Akali leaders surrendered to the security forces. At that point, Bhai Parmatma Singh bid farewell to the Sant and chose to join the Sikh resistance. He attained martyrdom while fighting, and remains among the few members of the Akali Dal who took up arms during the assault, either achieving martyrdom or being arrested.

Alongside him, many employees of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) also attained martyrdom while faithfully performing their duties at Sri Darbar Sahib. Though many had the option to leave, most felt it would be a betrayal of their Guru and their responsibilities, and chose instead to stand their ground.

A significant number of the detainees held at Jodhpur after the attack were SGPC workers. The Army, suspecting them of being combatants, imprisoned them. All of them endured over five years in detention and were finally released in 1989.
