Short Shaheedi Story

On 17th September 1990, Bhai Sukhdev Singh Chaba, Bhai Dharam Singh Kashtiwal, and Bhai Manjit Singh Dargabad were traveling from Ghasitpur to Dhadiala Natt to attend a meeting with Bhai Charat Singh Babbar. Bhai Dalbir Singh Bira left first, unarmed. DSP Ajaib Singh and Inspector Santa Singh, in plain clothes, ambushed Bhai Dalbir Singh on his way, silencing him. Later, Bhai Sukhdev Singh Chaba, Bhai Dharam Singh Kashtiwal, and Bhai Manjit Singh Dargabad also left unarmed. As they neared, the police attacked them. In the struggle, Bhai Sukhdev Singh Chaba shouted that it was the police. He and Bhai Dharam Singh Kashtiwal escaped, but Bhai Manjit Singh Dargabad could not break free and consumed a cyan1de capsule, attaining shaheedi. The police tried to make Bhai Dalbir Singh Bira identify the other Singhs, but he refused and was shot dead, also attaining shaheedi. The bodies of Bhai Manjit Singh Dargabad and Bhai Dalbir Singh Bira were taken to Gurdaspur Civil Hospital. Local Sikhs demanded the bodies, but the police attacked them and cremated the Singhs in secret. Their ashes were later recovered by the Khadku Singhs and given to their families.
