Short Shaheedi Story

On the afternoon of 27 February 1988, Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Shindu (KC Sharma), Bhai Harinder Singh Bunty, and Bhai Darshan Singh Malha were stopped at a bus stop in Sector 16, near the Government College for Girls. Police Cat Dalbeera, who was in civilian clothes, passed by and recognized Bhai KC Sharma and Bhai Bunty. He returned to stop his vehicle near the three Kharkus and greeted them as though meeting old friends. The Kharkus were unarmed at the time. As Dalbeera approached, he suddenly opened fire, shooting all three Kharkus. Passersby, as well as a flying squad from the Chandigarh police, initially mistook Dalbeera for a militant when he emptied his gun into Bhai KC Sharma. As the Chandigarh police chased him, Dalbeera managed to escape by flashing his police identity card and taking refuge at DGP Ribeiro’s official residence, which was located nearby. The following day, a triumphant DGP Ribeiro declared at the Secretariat that a “spotters’ party” from the Punjab Police Special Task Force (Police Cat Army) had eliminated the three Kharkus.
